New beatboxing and harmony group The Vocal Orchestra have been announced as headliners for the Udderbelly Festival at the Southbank Centre this summer.

The seven-strong group join a line-up which, as previously reported, will see Tim Minchin close five months of cabaret, music, sideshow and circus festivities on 8 July 2012.

Created and directed by award-winning beatboxer Shlomo, The Vocal Orchestra will play an hour-long show at the Udderbelly from 9 April to 27 May 2012.

A Guinness World Record holder, Shlomo has worked with musicians including Bjork, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Martha Wainwright, Imogen Heap, The Specials, DJ Yoda, Jason Mraz as well as comedians The Mighty Boosh.

The Vocal Orchestra production follows the success of Shlomo’s sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show Mouthtronica and collaborations with James Morrison and Michael Winslow as well as performances on BBC Radio 1.

The show is billed as “combining jaw dropping human beatboxing, glorious vocal harmonies and floor-wobbling bass lines”.

The Vocal Orchestra will cover songs from Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield to “Out of Space” by The Prodigy and David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”.

Further line-up details for the Udderbelly Festival, which this year is situated within a new South Bank festival, the London Wonderground, are expected to be announced shortly.
