Another screen-to-stage musical is in the works – an adaptation of Roman Holiday. The 1953 screen classic centres on a princess who, tired of her high-profile tour of Europe, sneaks away from the royal entourage in Rome and is rescued by an American newspaper reporter, who angles for an exclusive interview. In the William Wyler film, Audrey Hepburn played the princess, Anne, opposite Gregory Peck as the reporter, Joe Bradley.
In workshops for the planned stage production, the parts will be tackled by Elena Roger, who’s just been Whatsonstage.com Award-nominated for her title role in Piaf, and Lee Mead, who finishes in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat next month. Another Audrey Hepburn film classic, 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is also rumoured to be in development for a stage crossover, though as a play rather than a musical.
