Print Room’s Uncle Vanya returns in June due to demand

The Print Room’s current revival of Uncle Vanya, which closes on 28 April, will return for a three week run from 18 June to 7 July 2012 due to demand.

Directed by Lucy Bailey using Mike Poulton‘s adaptation, the production stars Iain Glen in the title role alongside Marlene Sidaway, William Houston, David Yelland, David Shaw-Parker, Charlotte Emmerson, Caroline Blakiston, Lucinda Millward and Andrew Hanratty.

First published in 1897, Uncle Vanya finds an elderly Professor and his glamorous wife visiting a rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle.

Vanya an Astrov fall for Elena and Sonya (the Professor’s daughter) meanwhile suffers from the awareness of her own lack of beauty and from her unrequited feelings for Dr Astrov. Matters are brought to a crisis when the Professor announces his intention to sell the estate, Vanya and Sonya’s home and raison d’être, with a view to investing the proceeds to achieve a higher income for himself and his wife.

Uncle Vanya was Chekhov’s twelfth play, following The Three Sisters. It was a redraft of the great Russian dramatist and short story writer’s earlier work, The Demon. It received its premiere at the Moscow Arts Theatre in 1899. 

The Print Room was founded in 2008 by artistic directors Anda Winters and Lucy Bailey.
