The critics’ pick of top theatre practitioners of 2006 gathered at the Prince of Wales Theatre yesterday afternoon for the 18th annual Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, voted by members of the professional association for those who make a living out of criticism.
Among those in attendance at the ceremony were prize winners Rufus Sewell (Best Actor), Tamsin Greig (Best Shakespearean Performance), Nina Raine (Best Playwright), Connie Fisher (Best Newcomer, who shared the accolade with Andrew Garfield), director Trevor Nunn, who collected the Best Play award on behalf of Tom Stoppard, John Tiffany (Best Director), and Punchdrunk’s Robin Harvey, Tina Bicat, Stephen Dobbie, Matt Prentice and Felix Barrett (Best Designer).
Among others joining the reception were Connie Fisher’s The Sound of Music co-stars, Sophie Bould, Lesley Garrett and Alexander Hanson (with his wife, the actress Samantha Bond), Rock ‘n’ Roll producer Sonia Friedman, and the ceremony’s guest speaker, the comedian and broadcaster Arthur Smith.
