this week’s major London theatre openings, in the West End and further
afield, are the West End transfer of Tina Turner musical Soul Sister at the Savoy Theatre, National Youth Musical Theatre’s 13, A New Musical at the Apollo Theatre, and the West End transfer of Kieran Lynn‘s new play An Incident at the Border:

Edinburgh Fringe 2012
All August

The

Shakespeare’s Bookends
21 August

The
Jack Studio Theatre in south-east London twin a very early Shakespeare, Two Gentlemen of Verona, with a very late one, Two Noble Kinsmen. Running in rep on alternate days until 8 September.

Opening Wednesday

An Incident at the Border

Recently transfered from the Finborough Theatre, Kieran Lyn‘s new play, about a couple divided by a country’s unexpectedly redrawn border, runs at the Trafalgar Studios until 15 September.


13, A New Musical
22 August 2012

The National Youth Musical Theatre take on Jason Robert Brown‘s musical centring on a 13-year-old boy’s upheaval after his parents’ divorce. Running at the Apollo Theatre until 25 August.

Soul Sister

(Previews from 20 August)

Jukebox musical featuring Tina Turner’s greatest hits, stars Emi Wokoma and Chris Tummings. The show tells the story of Ike and Tina, charting their first meeting and meteoric rise to fame through 1960s and 70s America, their turbulent marriage and Tina’s thrilling re-emergence as an international rock star and icon. Until 29 September.

The Illusion

Tony Kushner‘s adaptation of Corneille’s L’Illusion Comique sees a desperate father seek the help of a magician to track down his wayward son. Runs at the Southwark Playhouse until 8 September.

Opening Sunday

Jason Robert Brown & Very Special Guests

Jason Robert Brown leads a concert to raise money for the NYMT the day after 13, A New Musical closes. Featuring Ramin Karimloo (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Love Never Dies) and screen and stage star Lara Pulver (Sherlock, Spooks, Parade) as well as many NYMT performers. One night only at the Apollo Theatre.
