Broadway hit Next To Normal has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Drama; one of only eight musicals to have done so since the award was first given in 1918 (others include A Chorus Line and Rent). This, coupled with its Tony success last year, has added fuel to speculation that the show will transfer to the West End. However, with producers no doubt nervous in the wake of Spring Awakening‘s early closure last year, it may be deemed a risky proposition. Next To Normal focuses on the effect of mental illness on a suburban family and was described by influential New York Times critic Ben Brantley as a “brave, breathtaking musical”.
