Lovesong (Tour – Manchester)

Soul singer Omar teams up with award-winning writer/director, Ché Walker once again to present a new one act piece called Lovesong.

The brief 45 min show tells the story of a soul singer whose life is filled with drink, drugs and women, but something is missing. Reflecting on his choices and mistakes he is surprised to find fulfilment in the unlikeliest of places.

Lovesong is a one man show, or rather one man and a keyboard, Omar tells the story through a blend of monologues and music, both merge with great ease and create a simple but thoroughly engaging evening. Whilst some of the dialogue at times seemed a little contrived, especially coming from this characters mouth, the singer/actor delivers it with sincerity, and I must say it’s down to his surprisingly brilliant performance that Lovesong lingers with you after you have left the venue.

His voice as ever is on fine form, beautiful and soulful, however ironically it’s a few of the musical moments in the piece that slow it down slightly. This, however is only a minor criticism in what is a very inviting piece of theatre with a truly wonderful and honest performance.
