Lorna Luft has starred in the movie ”Grease 2”, performed her songs her mother (Judy Garland) taught her, and played the Wicked Witch of the West in ”The Wizard of Oz”. We chat to her about her latest piece, ”Puttin’ on the Ritz”.
Performing is in your genes, but what gives you the biggest buzz about getting on stage?
That I get to do what i love and get paid for it! Also, to know that everytime the curtain goes up there is a brand new audience i get to perform for. It is as exhilarating at 61 as it was at 11.
Which of the classic songs in the show are are your favourites and why?
I don’t have a favourite as it would mean the others aren’t. They are all great.
Grease 2 has become quite a cult movie and transformed into Cool Rider on stage. What are your memories of making the movie?
We had a wonderful time and we made life long friends. I am so grateful that it has become a cult classic film and the younger generations are still watching and enjoying it.
Why do you think these old classic songs are still popular?
Because how brilliantly they are written. People will always remember where they were when they first heard them. It takes them back to a much simpler time.
Why should audiences come and see Puttin' on the Ritz?
In a time when you turn on the news it can be over whelming. Why not spend a couple of hours in a theatre being taken away on a journey of music, dance and me!
Lorna Luft stars in Puttin' On the Ritz, currently touring the UK, including Cornwall, Edinburgh, Manchester and Norwich until 4 October.
