Leicester to See European Urinetown Premiere???

The Tony award winning Urinetown looks set to make its European debut before the end of the year and rumour has it that it has its sights set on the Leicester Curve.

Running for two years on Broadway, Urinetown satirises bureaucracy, capitalism and musicals themselves; challenging expectations with a surprisingly unconventional ending. Greg Kotis, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics, was best known for his dark comedies in Fringe Theatre until Urinetown, where his collaboration with Mark Hollmann converted both into internationally recognised names. Hollmann made his professional debut with the show, resulting in a Tony award for Best Musical Score in 2002.

The now iconic Curve in Leicester, with its striking glass design, has become renowned for its diversity of productions. Urinetown would certainly be no exception to this, possibly joining a line up of shows such as His Darkest Materials and the national tour of Little Shop of Horrors.

Whispers are claiming that Paul Kerryson, the artistic director at the Curve, will be directing and Matt Rawle, of Zorro and Miss Saigon fame, is being lined up to play the main character of Bobby Strong. Rawle was most recently nominated for a Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Actor in the title role of Zorro and collaborated in May with Kerryson in the acclaimed The Light in the Piazza at the Curve.
