He may be best known for his gritty satirical comedies, but according to The Sun, director Guy Ritchie is looking to try his hand at a movie remake of Frank Loesser’s 1950 Broadway musical Guys and Dolls.

Presumably keen to cash in on the success of the recent Hollywood stage-to-screen adaptations of Mamma Mia! and Chicago, Ritchie has apparently been “given the green light to embark on a casting mission to fill the roles of Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit”. The original film of Guys and Dolls, released in 1955, starred Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. Such an iconic cast will be difficult to match, but sources say that Ritchie is currently scouting in Los Angeles.

Guys and Dolls would certainly be a new path for Madonna’s ex, who is best known as a director for movies such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.

The musical is based on Damon Runyon’s short stories about New York gamblers and their girls in the 1940s, and features memorable songs such as “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” and “Luck Be a Lady”. The stage show recently enjoyed a two-year West End run at the Piccadilly Theatre, boasting names such as Ewan McGregor and Patrick Swayze in the male leads during its stint from 2005 and 2007, and winning no fewer than four Whatsonstage.com Awards and four Oliviers.
