The Girl in the Yellow Dress opens the Salisbury Playhouse’s season in the Salberg Studio this Autumn (5 – 22 October).

Pierre, a French-Congolese student, is keen to improve his English, and so books a series of weekly lessons with Celia, a beautiful and wealthy young woman living in a chic Parisian flat. But as the pair spend more time together, it becomes less clear who is teaching whom – as race, class and colonialism join grammar and vocabulary on the syllabus.

Rising South African playwright Craig Higginson’s gripping and erotically charged drama was a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival in 2010.

Director Tim Roseman, co-Artistic Director of hot new-writing venue Theatre 503, makes his Playhouse debut with this new production which continues a celebration of contemporary work in the Salberg Studio, following The Country, Death and the Maiden and Blackbird.

Clifford Samuel plays Pierre, and his theatre credits include the lead role in the premiere of New Coin at Soho Theatre and ‘Eilif’ in Mother Courage and Her Children at the National Theatre, alongside Fiona Shaw.

Fiona Button plays Celia, and has appeared alongside Judi Dench and Rosamund Pike in the Donmar Warehouse’ production of Madame De Sade at Wyndham’s.

The Girl in the Yellow Dress runs in the Salberg Studio, Salisbury Playhouse Wed 5 – Sat 22 October 2011.
