The Young Vic has appointed three new associate directors – Carrie Cracknell, Daniel Kramer and Sacha Wares –  and given current associate director Joe Hill-Gibbins a new role as Genesis Fellow and deputy artistic director.

The three associates will take up their positions next month, on an initial one-year contract. As well as contributing to programming and planning, they will facilitate activities for the Young Vic’s outreach department and mentor young directors on the venue’s Directors Program.

Each director will continue in their current jobs – Carrie Cracknell as co-artistic director of the Gate Theatre, Sacha Wares as an associate director of the Royal Court and Daniel Kramer as a freelance theatre and opera director.

Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous productions for the Young Vic include The Girlfriend Experience and A Respectable Wedding, will become the first Genesis Fellow at the Young Vic, a position funded by a two-year grant from the Genesis Foundation, a charity which nurtures and develops emerging talent.

In his new role as deputy artistic director, he will support artistic director David Lan in all aspects of the work of the theatre while continuing to direct. His next production will be the first major London revival of The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh this July in the Main House (See News, 24 Mar 2010).

Announcing the appointments today, David Lan said: “The Young Vic has always responded to the complexity of our world and the multiplicity of our identities by producing a diverse and eclectic program. It’s a major enhancement to have these brilliant and provocative directors at the heart of our thinking, our dreaming and our producing.

“I’m terrifically grateful to the Genesis Foundation for enabling our deep commitment to research over many years. The Fellowship is an imaginative new means of supporting our ever stronger desire to create work of the highest quality that resonates with the widest audience.”
