The Importance of Being Earnest has been done to death but it’s never been done by Witness Theatre. This young company is blowing the dust from Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, making it leap off the bookshelf with a new lease of life.

Witness Wilde’s world resuscitated with live music, physical comedy and tea and cake in a wholly immersive Victorian salon. Join Witness Theatre in playing the game of Victorian society and proving that classic texts are far from dead when filled with this much life.

This is a Brighton based company established in 2011, by Ellen Carr and Alice Devlin, who share a passion for telling engaging stories using a highly visual style. Each project promises to be a unique adventure that excites, delights and inspires.

The company is dedicated to the creation of powerful, provocative and utterly alive theatrical worlds; to taking the audience on an adventure, and to giving them an experience they’ll never forget. The Importance of Being Earnest marks the company’s professional debut, a bold choice with which they aim to create a different door through which to enter the world of classic theatre texts.

WARNING: Lady Bracknell may well deign to drink your tea, Jack may possibly choose to flirt with you and no cake is ever safe from the hungry gaze of Algernon. However, the rules of Victorian society must be obeyed at all times.

You will be welcomed into the tea salon on 11 – 13 May and 17 – 20 May at the Red Roaster Coffee House, 1d Saint James Street at 8pm, doors and cake at 7:30pm.
