The life and works of late Carribean/British playwright Barry Reckord, who died in December 2011, will be celebrated on-stage at the Bush Theatre on 23 September, staged by Talawa Theatre Company.

The evening, entitled Reckord Celebrations will be directed by Michael Buffong, artistic director of Talawa, a theatre company dedicated to increasing opportunities for ethnic minorities to participate in theatre. He described Reckord’s contribution to the theatrical landscape as “undeniable but sadly underrepresented”, adding that “with this memorial we have the opportunity to keep his legacy alive for future generations.”

Staged readings of Reckord’s plays and television work, as well as a series of tributes from arts personalities such as Guardian critic Michael Billington, actor/director Don Warrington, and novelist Diana Athill.

Reckord was born in Jamaica, but spent most of his life in the UK, where his work included the award-winning 1963 play Skyvers at the Royal Court, Flesh to a Tiger, You in Your Small Corner and the television dramas In the Beautiful Caribbean and Club Havana.

Proceeds from Reckord Celebrations will go to the recently established Barry Reckord Bursary, designed to support emerging playwright from minority backgrounds.
