All-Male Iolanthe Transfers to Wilton’s, 1 Apr

The Union Theatre’s all-male production of Iolanthe which played the Southwark venue from November last year will transfer to Wilton’s Music Hall, opening on 1 April (previews from 30 March) where it will play a limited run until 7 May 2011.

The move follows Sasha Regan‘s hit all-male Pirates of Penzance which made the same move last year, picking up the 2010 Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Off-West End show en route.

A topsy-turvy love story, Iolanthe was first performed at the Savoy Theatre in 1882 and sees a band of fairies, led by the eponymous Iolanthe, mistress of fairy revels, go up against members of the House of Lords in an attempt to persuade the Lord Chancellor to allow his beautiful ward, Phyllis, to marry Iolanthe’s son, Strephon.

One of Gilbert and Sullivan’s fourteen musicals, and is regarded as one of Sullivan’s most beautiful scores.

Directed by the Union’s founder and artistic director Sasha Regan, the production is the latest in a series of all-male Gilbert and Sullivan productions staged by the Union and follows HMS Pinafore and The Mikado as well as Pirates.

Although full casting for the Wilton’s transfer has still to be confirmed the 14-strong cast is expected to include most of the actors from the Union Theatre production, many of whom appeared in Pirates of Penzance.

Directed by Sasha Regan, with musical direction by Chris Mundy and choreography by Mark Smith, Iolanthe is produced by Regan Dewynter.
