West End stars young and old were out in force at the Vaudeville Theatre last night (2 September 2009) to welcome Alan Cumming back to the London stage for the first time since 2006.

Cumming’s cabaret show I Bought a Blue Car Today arrives in the West End as part of an international tour. The show features a collection of songs (from singers as diverse as Frank Sinatra and Cyndi Lauper) and stories, centring on the acclaimed actor’s recent application for US citizenship.

Celebrities celebrating his return last night ranged from fellow RSC veterans Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman to West End newcomers Charlotte Wakefield and Lucy Barker, stars of the recently closed Spring Awakening. Also in attendance was comedian Frank Skinner (fresh from presenting the Edinburgh Comedy Awards) and Leanne Jones, making the most of a night off following her recent departure from Hairspray.
