Last night (5 October 2011) saw 85 theatregoers at the Aldwych to see Cool Hand Luke; which tells of a decorated WWII veteran and his refusal to conform to life in a Florida prison camp and frequently tries to escape. It’s the hard-hitting story of a true original. He’ll play it real cool in the face of brutality. He’ll always get back up after a beating. He’ll eat fifty eggs in an hour, to win a bet. A man who won’t conform no matter what it costs.

Marc Warren plays the title role, with some great performances from a strong supporting cast. With a personal highlight being the iconic egg eating scene, Warren keeps the laughs aplenty but refused to tell us how he does it in our post show Q&A.

We were lucky enough to be joined by almost the entire cast at the Q&A, as well as the writer/adapter Emma Reeves, all of whom gave us a fascinating insight into how the film did or didn’t influence their roles, the adaptation of the original book as well as sparking a lively debate about how the music affects the piece!

As always, please feel free to email your comments and thoughts about the play, as well as any of your favourite insights and pictures from last night to feedback@whatsonstage.com. We would love to hear from you.
