October 2011 sees the World Premiere of Anthony Weigh’s new working of Federico Garcia Lorca‘s Yerma visit East Yorkshire for its debut.

From 19th to 29th October Yerma will play at Hull Truck before moving to Notting Hill’s Gate Theatre from 9th November to 17th December.

This new adaptation of the 1930s Spanish classic is written by Australian-born playwright Weigh. Weigh’s previous works include 2000 Feet Awaywhich starred Joseph Fiennes at the Bush Theatre where Weigh is an Associate Playwright, and a one-year stint as a Playwright in Residence at the National Theatre in 2009.

This reworking of the classic story of Yerma is Directed by Natalie Abrahami. Abrahami is the Joint Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre, and is developing a strong reputation for reinventing international classics through modern, innovative interpretations that merge contemporary dance with music and theatre. Her directing credits for the Gate include How to be An Other Woman and Women in Love.

The story itself sees the female protagonist desperate to start a family in a society where a childless woman is desolate. Her name itself means “barren.” The harrowing narrative follows her process of self-learning which culminates in the heartbreaking discovery of a secret her husband has kept. The play ends with a shocking crime as Yerma is haunted by her husband’s control and the spirits of her children. Weigh illustrates the dramatic extremes of men and woman driven by their primal instincts and urges. Some critics say the story acts as Lorca’s reflection upon the strict, Catholic morality in his lifetime.

Yerma has undergone countless interpretations and adaptations, but Weigh’s version promises to be unforgettable.
