Following the death of Gary Coleman last week, the New York Times reported that the writers of Avenue Q have made some changes to the show, which parodies the Diff’rent Strokes star’s fall from grace. Book writer Jeff Whitty told the newspaper he “shed tears” for Coleman, but would “miss him too much” to cut the character from the show. Instead, small edits have been made to the scenes which involve him – “We probably cut 20 words out of 1 million”, Whitty said.

A spokesman for the West End run confirmed to Whatsonstage.com that these changes have also been applied to the London show, which is currently at Wyndham’s Theatre. He said the edits – such as changing a reference to Coleman as a “former child star” to simply a “child star” – would not be permanent.
