Idle Motion’s production of this new play – in which an aviation expert
records a documentary on flight while his wife flies across the world
to bury the grandmother she never met – is a masterclass in staging,
narrative and theatrical imagination.

In a production owing much to Simon McBurney and Katie Mitchell (but
without the technology of the former or the self-regard of the
latter), every moment of this 50-minute show is immaculately designed,
lit, paced and performed.

If you had your hands over your ears
Throughout, you would still be in awe at the visual panache. But you
would miss out on a subtle, thoughtful script and a beautiful sound
score. The play itself is not just there to allow a succession of
clever-clever theatre tricks. It would work as a play if staged
conventionally. But it’s the inspiring harmony between all the
different ingredients which makes it special.

Vanishing Horizon vividly demonstrates that if you have
imagination and apply it to every detail, the sky may not even be the
limit.
