RSC Paints a Public Picture

The Royal Shakespeare Company is inviting members of the public to help create ‘My RSC Gallery,’ a new art exhibition for the transformed Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

The proposed Gallery which will see 50 boxes embedded into the walls of the new theatre, each displaying individual works of art, is an extension of the company’s efforts to involve the theatre-going public in the creation of the new building due to open later this year.

RSC Events & Exhibition Manager, Jo Whitford, commented “Throughout the project, we have invited people to be part of the process, opening the site to the public whenever possible, and asking for their opinions throughout the consultation, so it felt right that they should have this chance to create something unique for the RST and share in the excitement surrounding the new theatre. This is an opportunity for people to play their part in the RST’s transformation, and we are keen for as many as possible to participate. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results.”

People taking part will be asked to send photographs of their artwork via the RSC website, in advance of selections being made for the My RSC Gallery. Those chosen will be then be contacted to submit the physical artwork itself, ready to feature in the exhibition.

Inspiration is encouraged from any personal connection with the RSC and its works through anything from models, paintings or sculptures through to items from theatre trips, objects or words. Participants are also asked to include a 100-word description of their work.
