There is something deeply ironic about meeting a woman best known as a glamour model, in a church. Abi Titmuss has swapped lads’ mags and baby oil for Stanislavski and Vocalzones: she is now a serious actor. After a few small-scale theatrical duds, she’s soon to be playing the lead role in John Godber‘s Oliver Award-winning Up ‘n’ Under at this year’s Edinburgh Festival.
She’s not the most warm interviewee, perhaps wary of the media after countless scrapes in past years. After ensuring her hair is perfectly placed the recording begins and she transforms into the smiley flirtly persona for which she is best known. Our chat is brief but I end up – somewhat surprisingly – having quite a bit of respect for Titmuss. Her inner strength and self-confidence is admirable. She is working hard to silence her critics and succeed in an industry which is already tough without a dodgy past.
Up ‘n’ Under is running at Assembly @ George Street, 6-30 August at 17.25
