The Ukulele Project

Once upon a time, the ukulele was only strummed by music hall eccentrics such as George Formby, who used it as a weapon of cheeky sexuality when perched up a ladder, cleaning windows in order to peer through.

Times change, and this talented quartet of nice middle-class teenagers, only together for the past six months, demonstrate the range and diversity of an instrument that has the plangent pluckiness of the mandolin and the rhythmic power of the acoustic guitar.

I must single out a baby-faced troubadour called Marcus Rice, who delivers brilliant cover versions of Radiohead classics (“Karma Police” and “No Surprises”); and leads a wonderful Beatles medley, as well as a stomping “Minnie the Moocher” (with audience participation).

There’s also Erik Satie, Enya, Electric 6 and “Kung Fu Fighting.” The James Bond selection is superfluous to requirements, and not very good. Everything else: fabulous, and a lovely lunchtime divertissement
