Subtext (Bristol)

Subtext, promising “a dynamic and contemporary evening of explosive dance with witty and vibrant theatre”, is a collaboration by two emerging West Country dance companies – Swindon based Swerve Dance Theatre Company” and “Neshima Dance Company” from Bristol. For Subtext they have put together four pieces – with two performed by each company.

. Don’t go to see this production hoping to see a conventional evening of dance or ballet, as you will be disappointed. Go with no pre-set expectations and I think you will find it very exciting. Both companies perform some exceptional and theatrical dance pieces in a very unconventional way, and the audience is kept wondering just what they will do next.

The dancing is faultless – interestingly choreographed by Batel Magen, artistic director for Neshima, and Helen Ganberg for Swerve. In each segment, the performers are first class and as ensemble pieces, it is impossible to pick any one dancer over another.

The music is well chosen and performed with enthusiasm. I must make especial mention of Daniela Tourgeman who composed and performed several of the musical pieces. They are informative and mood setting. The costumes designed by Ashleigh McPherson are interesting and appropriate whilst giving room for the dancers to move freely. There are no specific sets, but great use is made of the various props, and the lighting – designed by Frazer Riches and Guy Dickens – does an excellent job of setting the ambience for the dance pieces.

If you enjoy a challenge and like to expand your theatre experiences then go along and see Subtext – it may leave you thinking.
