Scottish actor Peter Grimes dies aged 48

Dundee-born actor Peter Grimes has died at the age of 48 following a long-term illness.

Grimes worked with many established theatre companies in his lifetime, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Communicado Theatre Company and Dundee Rep.

He was also known for writing and performing the play Bleach, which premiered in New Zealand and enjoyed successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

His other work included performing his own adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which he did in association with Walk the Plank Theatre Company in 2003. The show was performed aboard a theatre ship, which sailed around the UK for the duration of the run.

Grimes' brother Ged, a musician, said: "We are devastated by the loss of Peter. He was a unique individual with a real sense of social justice. He firmly believed theatre should be for everyone and this was reflected in his eclectic choice of acting roles."

Grimes is survived by his two sons and stepson.
