Meanwhile, unlike with The Addams Family, Broadway critics have been falling over themselves to heap praise on London’s very own Menier Chocolate Factory revival of La Cage aux Folles, which opened at New York’s Longacre Theatre on Sunday (18 April 2010) and particularly its British star Douglas Hodge, reprising his drag queen performance as Albin. It’s “a bravura Broadway debut” hails the New York Times’ infamous critic Ben Brantley, who goes on to declare that Hodge’s take on “I Am What I Am” is “the most electric interpretation of a song on Broadway right now”. Not bad going for an actor better versed in Harold Pinter than Rodgers and Hammerstein. Any bets on whether Hodge can add a Tony Award to his 2009 Olivier for the role?
