Crossley, Rooper & Margolyes Lead Sheffield Girl

Jemima Rooper and Daniel Crossley will star in Anna Mackmin’s forthcoming revival of classic English musical comedy Me and My Girl, which runs at Sheffield Crucible from 9 December 2010 (previews from 2 December) until 29 January 2011.

Crossley and Rooper, who is currently on stage in the acclaimed West End revival of Arthur Miller’s play All My Sons with David Suchet and Zoe Wanamaker, will also be joined in the cast by two-time Whatsonstage.com Award winner Miriam Margolyes as the Duchess.

Set in England in 1936, Me and My Girl centres on cockney charmer Bill Snibson (Crossley), who discovers he’s heir to a fortune. But would he rather have a life of luxury than live happily ever after with his girl Sally (Rooper)?

It has music by Noel Gay and lyrics by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber who also jointly wrote the book, which was revised in 1984 by actor-writer-comedian Stephen Fry with contributions by Mike Ockrent. The score includes “The Lambeth Walk”, “The Sun Has Got Its Hat On” and the title song.

As well as All My Sons, Rooper’s other recent stage credits include the Tricycle’s Great Game season, and The Power of Yes and Her Naked Skin at the National. Crossley was recently seen in the Olivier Award-winning Open Air Theatre revival of Hello, Dolly!, for which he was Whatsonstage.com Award nominated, and Mary Poppins in the West End and on tour.

Proof of her wide-ranging credits, Miriam Margolyes won her Whatsonstage.com Awards for Wicked (Best Supporting Actress in a Musical) and, this past year, for Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (Best Supporting Actress in a Play.)

Me and My Girl marks the musical debut for Anna Mackmin. The production is choreographed by Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear and designed by Peter McKintosh. It’s tipped to transfer to the West End following Sheffield, though no dates or venue have yet been confirmed.
