The Donmar Warehouse’s eagerly anticipated new staging of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, starring an A-list cast led by Gillian Anderson and Toby Stephens, opened at the company’s Covent Garden home last night (19 May 2009, previews from 14 May).

In this new version of Ibsen’s 1879 classic, adapted by Further Than the Furthest Thing’s Zinnie Harris, the action takes place against the backdrop of British politics at the turn of the last century, in a world where duty, power and hypocrisy rule. The production is directed by Kfir Yefet, who won the BAFTA for Best Short Film for It’s Not Unusual.

Alongside Anderson and Stephens, the cast also features former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston, Tara Fitzgerald, Maggie Wells and Anton Lesser (See News, 27 Mar 2009).

A Doll’s House and other programming at the Donmar’s Covent Garden home runs simultaneously with the theatre’s even higher-profile year-long West End residency at Wyndham’s Theatre, where Hamlet, starring Jude Law, opens in two weeks’ time (2 June, previews from 29 May).

Also celebrating this week (18 May 2009, previews from 14 May) was American actor and playwright Wallace Shawn, who is starring in the premiere of his new play Grasses of a Thousand Colours at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs as part of the venue’s season dedicated to his work (See News, 6 Nov 2008).

Alongside Shawn, the cast features Emily McDonnell, Miranda Richardson and Jennifer Tilly with direction by Shawn’s long time collaborator and My Dinner with Andre co-star, Andre Gregory.
