The winners were revealed this evening at the Royal Albert Hall
The winners have been revealed for this year’s Olivier Awards.
The event took place this evening at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Emmy Award-winner Hannah Waddingham for the second year.
The Oliviers are one of the most prolific nights of the theatrical calendar – when the crème de la crème of the theatre world gather together and celebrate the performing arts in London. They have been running since 1976, and winning an Olivier Award is a stamp of the highest approval by representatives from across the industry.
The big winner on the night was Sunset Boulevard, who picked up a total of seven Olivier Awards including Best Musical Revival, Best Director (Jamie Lloyd) and both Best Actress and Best Actor in a Musical for Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis respectively.
Best New Musical went to Operation Mincemeat, which also took home the Best Supporting Actor in a Musical award for Jak Malone.
The National Theatre won big with three awards including Best New Play – a back-of-the-net result for James Graham with Dear England. Two acting awards also went to the venue – Dear England’s Will Close for his portrayal of Harry Kane, and Mark Gatiss for his turn as John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue.
Another winner of two awards was sci-fi prequel stage show Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which picked up Best Set Design and Best Comedy or Entertainment Award.
Eleanor Lloyd, President of SOLT (who organise the awards) said: “The Olivier Awards have once again showcased the best of London theatre and the huge talent of this incredible sector. Congratulations to all of the worthy winners and every nominee for your immense and valued contribution.”
