Musical 'spectacular' Notre-Dame de Paris to run at the Coliseum in 2019

The French musical Notre-Dame de Paris is to return to London this year in a 20th anniversary production at the Coliseum.

The piece, which originally opened in Paris in 1998, is based on Victor Hugo's 1831 French novel of the same name. It tells the story of the hunchbacked bell-ringer Quasimodo and his love for the gypsy Esmeralda.

Notre Dame de Paris went on tour after it's initial opening across 16 countries and was translated into nine different languages. It was commended in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2000 for its record success for a musical in its first year. "Belle", the single released, sold 2.5 million copies and the album sold over 3 million copies.

Producer Nicolas Talar said: "It gives me great excitement to bring this classic tale to the London stage. Almost two centuries after the novel captured imaginations, we have now been fortunate enough to share this extraordinary story to audiences worldwide for two decades."

The music is composed by Richard Cocciante, with lyrics by Luc Plamondon, and is a sung-through piece performed by an international ensemble of singers, dancers and acrobats. The show runs from 23 to 27 January 2019 and will be performed in French with English surtitles and a live orchestra. Ticket prices range from £15 to £125.
