Maggie Smith to return to the stage in A German Life at the Bridge Theatre

Maggie Smith will perform on stage for the first time in 12 years for five-weeks in a solo show at the Bridge Theatre.

Entitled A German Life, the piece is a new play by Christopher Hampton and tells the story of the life of Brunhilde Pomsel. Pomsel worked as a secretary during the 1930s and had many employers including Jewish insurance brokers, German broadcasters and Joseph Goebbels. Hampton has based the play on Pomsel's testimonial given shortly before she died.

Directed by Jonathan Kent, the production will have design by lighting by Jon Clark with sound by Paul Groothuis.

Tickets for the show will be publically available on 26 February.

A German Life runs from 6 April 2019 with the opening night on Friday 12 April until 11 May.

Smith is a multi-award-winning performer, and has recently starred in the hit TV show Downton Abbey, with credits before that including Harry Potter and Oh! What a Lovely War.
