US theatre producers Fox Stage Productions and Kevin McCollum have confirmed initial details for the musical adaptation of hit film Mrs Doubtfire.

Based on the 1993 film starring the late Robin Williams, the musical will be written by John O'Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick (Something Rotten!), with music and lyrics by Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Four-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Zaks (Hello, Dolly!, A Bronx Tale) will direct.

In a statement, McCollum and Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions said: "Mrs Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving. Getting this team together and crafting Mrs Doubtfire for the stage has been pure joy. We can't wait to get into production."

Mrs Doubtfire follows struggling actor Daniel Hillard (played by Williams in the film) as he loses custody of his children and disguises himself as Euphegenia Doubtfire, a British nanny, in order to get closer to them. The movie won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Williams.

Casting and dates have yet to be announced.

It is not the first time the movie has been earmarked for the stage, back in 2015 Alan Menken (Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast) told Entertainment Weekly that he was in the 'early stages' of developing the show with collaborators David Zippel and Harvey Fierstein – who played Williams' brother Frank in the film.
