Fresh from winning four gongs at the 2012 Whatsonstage.com Awards, the Royal Shakespeare Company has announced plans to transfer its hit production of Matilda The Musical to New York early next year.
Matilda premiered at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon with a twelve week run from November 2010 to January 2011, subsequently transferring to the West End’s Cambridge Theatre on 25 October, where it continues to play to sold-out houses.
Adapted from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel, Matilda The Musical is written by the playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by the Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, and direction is by Matthew Warchus.
The production is designed by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and special effects and illusions are by Paul Kieve.
At the Whatsonstage.com Awards, Darling, Minchin and Howell all won individual awards while Matilda was also voted Best New Musical.
