Ray Davies musical on sale in Liverpool

Tickets went on sale this week for the Liverpool visit of touring production Come Dancing, written and starring former Kinks frontman Ray Davies.

The Bill Kenwright production heads on a UK tour from its original home at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, before visiting the Liverpool Empire in March next year.

The new musical, named after the hit song by The Kinks, is the rock legend’s semi-autobiographical story of love in the Ilford Palais ballroom in the 1950s.

Davies wrote more than twenty songs reminiscent of the period for the production and is confirmed to appear in the cast in Liverpool.

Come Dancing was inspired, Davies has said, by his early days when he used to watch his six sisters head off to the dances.

In fact, the musical’s central character, Julie, is based on all of his sisters – in particular one who tragically died in a dance hall from a heart condition.

The Palais was a well-known venue in east London as a ballroom, music venue and nightclub, which became demolished.
