Matthew Bourne's The Red Shoes to return for UK tour

Matthew Bourne's award-winning hit The Red Shoes will return for a new tour, it has been announced.

Using the music from composer Bernard Herrman, Bourne's production is based on the iconic film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger of the same name. The piece sold out in its world premiere run in 2016, and went on to win two Olivier Awards and toured across the UK and the US.

The national tour opens on Monday 18 November at Theatre Royal Plymouth and runs until Saturday 23 November, before visiting The Lowry, Salford, from Tuesday 26 November to Saturday 30 November; ahead of a seven-week Christmas season at Sadler's Wells, London, from Tuesday 3 December to Sunday 19 January 2020. Further tour dates for 2020 and casting are to be confirmed.

The Red Shoes is orchestrated by Terry Davies and played by the New Adventures Orchestra, with cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable, sound by Paul Groothuis and projection from Duncan McLean.

The tour comes as Bourne is announced as the recipient of this year's Special Award at the Olivier Awards 2019, in recognition of his achievements in dance over the past 30 years. To date, Bourne has received seven Olivier Awards, and with this special award ties with Judi Dench as the joint holder of the most Oliviers.
