A bunch of blarney? Apparently not. Irish theatre company Long Road Productions is presenting a new musical satire about David and Victoria Beckham, which is due to premiere in Dublin in the new year. MacBecks is based on the life and romance of the footballer and the former Spice Girl but will also borrow heavily from Macbeth (thus the title) as well as Shakespeare’s King Lear and Romeo and Juliet and Rostand’s French classic Cyrano de Bergerac.
MacBecks is written by Gary Cooke and Malachy McKenna, who previously collaborated on I Keano, a spoof about Irish footballer Roy Keane’s walkout from the 2002 World Cup. Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will both feature as characters in Macbecks, as will Rebecca Loos, the former PA who sold her kiss-and-tell story about David Beckham to the tabloids.
