A shaven-headed Alfred Molina was celebrating his first return to the London stage in over ten years last night at the Donmar Warehouse, where he’s currently starring as artist Mark Rothko in John’s Logan’s Red.

Red centres on Rothko who, under the watchful gaze of his young assistant and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, takes on his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.

Molina, whose myriad film credits include Frida, Chocolat and Spider-Man 2, stars alongside Eddie Redmayne, who was nominated for Best Actor in the 2009 Whatsonstage.com Awards for last year’s premiere of Now or Later at the Royal Court. It’s directed by Donmar artistic director Michael Grandage and designed by Christopher Oram.
