Amélie musical to have UK premiere and tour in 2019
The Broadway musical based on the hit film Amélie will have its UK premiere in 2019.
Originally premiering at the Berkeley Rep Theatre in September 2015 before running on Broadway in 2017, the show has music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen and a book by Craig Lucas.
It will have its UK premiere at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury, where it runs from 11 April to 18 May 2019, before embarking on an extensive UK tour from 20 May, visiting Wimbledon, Exeter, Wycombe, New Theatre Oxford, Edinburgh, Bradford, Leicester Haymarket, Birmingham, Glasgow and Woking, with more venues to be confirmed. Once the UK tour has concluded in August 2019, the piece will tour internationally.
Michael Fentiman (The Importance of Being Earnest) will direct, with star casting and the creative team for the show to be announced.
The stage show is based on the 2001 romantic comedy film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, which was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two BAFTA Awards. The stage production has starred Samantha Barks (Les Misérables) in Berkeley and Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) on Broadway as the lead character, who lives in Paris and feels emotionally distant from those she encounters.
The Watermill, which today announces its 2019 season, has produced a variety of musicals recently, including Sweet Charity starring Gemma Sutton and Crazy for You, which embarked on a major UK tour after premiering in 2016. Amélie is produced by Hartshorn-Hook, Selladoor Productions, The Watermill Theatre, and Broadway Asia Company.
