We pick our team of theatreland’s finest for the biggest sporting event in the world
Football and Theatre are two events that don't often cross over, but with WhatsOnStage HQ getting excited about the festivities commencing tomorrow (including editor Theo Bosanquet picking Switzerland in the sweepstake), we thought we'd pick our World Cup Stagey Dream Team.
In goal we've gone for Rafiki from The Lion King, we've seen how good she is with her hands lifting up Simba, so she's a safe pick for keeping the ball out of the net. Our defence is made up of the strongest, hardest men in theatre; Javert from Les Miserables, Frank Farmer from The Bodyguard, Eddie Carbone from A View from the Bridge and Chris from Miss Saigon.
In midfield we've gone for Billy Elliot on the right wing, his nimble footwork will come in handy. Dancing Queen Donna from Mamma Mia!, will jive right through the centre of the pitch, whilst Elphaba from Wicked will fly down the left wing. Completing the midfield is our captain, Henry V, whose rousing rendition of "Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'" will give our guys the necessary motivation.
For our strike force we have plumped for Joey from War Horse who has raw horse power and an extra two feet to get on the ball when it matters most, and Phantom from The Phantom of the Opera who, if he shows as much determination in front of goal as he does pursuing Christine, will be a popular choice for the Golden Boot.
There could only be one manager for our team of West End heroes, Cameron Mackintosh, who not only has the leadership skills to guide us to the win, but also has the money to charter our private plane to Brazil. We've picked Christopher Boone from The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time as our tactician, his mathematical wizardry will come in handy when devising set plays. Finishing off our line-up is Matilda and Young Eponine from Les Miserables, adding the cute factor to our squad.
