The film version of the hit novel was a huge success at the box office

Lionsgate has announced plans to bring The Housemaid to the stage, with a theatrical adaptation of the psychological thriller now in development following the film’s worldwide box office success.
The production is being developed by producers Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot, with playwright Bekah Brunstetter attached to write the stage version.
The adaptation continues the expansion of the franchise based on The Housemaid, the novel by Freida McFadden, which was adapted into a feature film released in December 2025 and has grossed close to $400 million worldwide.
A sequel film, based on the second book in the trilogy, is also in development and is expected to begin production later this year ahead of a planned December 2027 release.
Lionsgate’s stage ventures include The Hunger Games: On Stage, currently running in a purpose-built venue in Canary Wharf, a North American tour of Dirty Dancing launching later this year, and a stage musical adaptation of La La Land in development with producer Marc Platt.
Jenefer Brown, president of global products and experiences at Lionsgate, said: “The Housemaid has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation – a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage. This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences. We’re excited to collaborate with Simon, Hanna, and Bekah to bring The Housemaid to theatre-goers in a new and intimate way.”
Friend added: “When I first read The Housemaid it was exhilarating, and what occurred to me is how truly theatrical the story is, not only happening largely in a single, claustrophobic location, but the twisty elements which contemporise what has long worked in potboiler stage thrillers.
“Bringing this story to live theatre, after the immensely successful film, offers the chance to heighten its intensity in a shared way, and we’re thrilled to join forces with Lionsgate and Bekah.”
Brunstetter said: “I’m so thrilled to be bringing this gripping, emotional, strange, and even funny story to the stage. Not only have I fallen in love with the adaptation process and bringing books to life on both stage and screen, I’m extremely excited to dig into The Housemaid’s incredibly universal themes of jealousy, the pain of desire, and the traumas that connect us.”
Melting Pot’s stage work includes the WhatsOnStage, Olivier and Tony Award-winning adaptation of Life of Pi, as well as productions of Paranormal Activity (set for Broadway), Ghost Stories, The Girl on the Train and Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts. Friend also produced The Father, which won two Academy Awards including Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins.
Brunstetter received a Tony Award nomination for writing the book of The Notebook alongside Ingrid Michaelson. Her screen work includes This Is Us, Maid, American Gods and the upcoming television adaptation of The Five-Star Weekend, starring Jennifer Garner.
