Simon Callow brings The Man Jesus to West End as part of UK tour

Matthew Hurt's one man play The Man Jesus, starring Simon Callow, is coming to the West End later this year as part of a UK tour.

The show, which premiered at Belfast's Lyric Theatre last year, looks at key moments in the life of Jesus, with Callow delivering a "moving account of biblical stories including the revival of Lazarus, the wedding at Cana and the journey to Jerusalem."

It now embarks on a limited UK tour at the Lowry, Salford on 10 September 2014, including a stop at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue on 6 October.

Callow's previous one man outings include The Mystery of Charles Dickens by Peter Ackroyd and Being Shakespeare by Jonathan Bate. He will be reprising Juvenalia at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

According to press material, "His powerful portrayal of the tyrants, traitors and madmen in Jesus' life asks people of all faiths and none: what sort of a man was able to inspire the history of the world?"

The Man Jesus is directed by Joseph Alford, artistic director of Theatre O and produced by Ros Povey, Zoë Simpson and Seabright Productions.
