Sherman Theatre announces 2027 season

Sherman Theatre has announced its 2027 season, marking Francesca Goodridge’s first programme as artistic director.

The season will feature eight new productions, including three collaborations with companies in Wales and England.

The season opens with Monument by Rhys Warrington, a co-production with the Royal Court Theatre. Directed by Goodridge, the production will run at the Sherman from 29 January to 13 February 2027, following its Royal Court run from 3 December 2026 to 23 January 2027. Warrington is the recipient of the second Davidson PlayGC Bursary, supported by PlayGC Theatre Company and the Alan Davidson Foundation. The Sherman performances are supported by the Colwinston Charitable Trust.

Goodridge will then direct Macbeth [re]imagined from 12 to 27 March 2027. The production is a new version of Shakespeare’s play set in the contemporary manosphere, with additional scenes and dialogue by Rebecca Jade Hammond. Mared Jarman will play Lady Macbeth, with further casting to be announced.

The production will have integrated BSL and captioning, with BSL signing, audio description and captioning incorporated into every performance. It forms part of the Craidd collaboration, of which Sherman Theatre is one of five partner organisations, supported by Arts Council of Wales.

Sherman Theatre and Theatr Clwyd will co-produce the premiere of Princess of Wales by Daf James from 8 to 23 October 2027. James, whose work includes Lost Boys and Fairies and Tylwyth, won an International Emmy for Lost Boys and Fairies.

The play follows a Grangetown family across two days in 1981 and 1997, surrounding the wedding of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her funeral.

The Sherman’s Christmas production for 2027 will be Treasure Island(ish) by Hannah McPake, running in the Main House from 26 November to 31 December. McPake previously wrote Tales of the Brothers Grimm and Alice: Return to Wonderland. The production will offer a Cardiff setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate story and is aimed at audiences aged seven and over.

In the Studio, Hanna Jarman will present Billy Goats Gruff/Y Tri Bwch Gafr from 22 November to 31 December. The production will be performed separately in English and Welsh and is aimed at audiences aged three to six.

The Sherman will also stage its 12th collaboration with the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama as part of the New festival in May 2027. The Sherman commission, Civilisation by Matthew Bulgo, will be directed by Kwame Owusu. The play is described as an absurdist comedy about humanity’s tendency towards selfishness during collective catastrophe.

The centenary of Cardiff City’s 1927 FA Cup victory will be marked with two community-led productions: Love, Cardiff: Football Stories will run from 8 to 10 July 2027. Created with Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, the verbatim production will be performed by the ShermanPlayers ensemble and explore the club’s FA Cup victory alongside contemporary stories of people affected by football. Francesca Pickard will direct.

The Sherman Youth Theatre will also present a new adaptation of Maurice Maeterlinck’s The Blue Bird, performed by members aged eight to 18. The play was the source of Cardiff City’s nickname, following its production at Cardiff’s New Theatre in 1911.

Monument and Macbeth [re]imagined will go on sale to Sherman+ Members on 15 September 2026, Sherman Members on 17 September and general sale on 18 September. Tickets for the remaining productions will go on sale in late November 2026.
