Ruth Negga and Cush Jumbo as Hamlet in Young Vic's new season

Cush Jumbo is to take on the role of Hamlet in the Young Vic's new season, it has been announced.

The Good Fight actress be directed by her long-time collaborator Greg Hersov in Hamlet which will run from 6 July to 20 August 2020. Design for the show will be from Anna Fleischle, lighting from Neil Austin, sound from Adam Cork and casting by Sophie Holland.

The production runs as part of Kwame Kwei-Armah's new season which also features Ruth Negga who will play Portia in Portia Coughlan. Marina Carr's play, directed by Caroline Byrne, is set in Ireland on Portia's 30th birthday and the 15th anniversary of the death of her twin brother. It runs from 16 September to 31 October 2020.

Also in the season is Nora: A Doll's House, a radical reworking of Ibsen's play in a co-production with Glasgow's Citizens Theatre. The show will be directed by Elizabeth Freestone, with design by Tom Piper, lighting by Lee Curran, composition and sound by Michael John McCarthy and movement by Emily-Jane Boyle. The show will run from 6 February to 21 March 2020.

The world premiere of Orfeus: A House Music Opera is a contemporary retelling of Ovid's myth, created and starring Nmon Ford as Orfeus. The piece is directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and runs from 14 April to 30 May.

In a Young Vic and LIFT co-production, Nat Randall and Anna Breckon's The Second Woman will run in June 2020. The piece is inspired by John Cassavetes 1977 film Opening Night and will have an all-female-identifying and non-binary team mixing and capturing the action live from multiple cameras. Video design is from EO Gill and Breckon, lighting from Amber Silk and Kayla Burrett, sound from Nina Buchanan, set from Future Method Studio and hair and makeup is Sophie Roberts.

The venue also announces DJ and club nights in the Maria studio, with dates and artists to be announced. The Young Vic's participation programme Taking Part continues with a new season of work created with the local community including 8196 Humans and Twenty Twenty.

"Stef Smith's radical new version of Ibsen's A Doll's House seen through an entirely fresh lens; Nmon Ford's Orfeus, the first house music opera; and the genre-busting, utterly unique 24-hour endurance feat, The Second Woman, a co-production with LIFT. My hope is that these plays and these players will do more than just entertain us, they will reflect and refract the times we are living in."
