Tom Hiddleston fans were delighted by our revelation at last night’s Olivier Awards that the Thor star is returning to the stage in the coming months – our tweet about it got over 100 retweets!

Speaking in the press room after presenting the award for Best New Play to the evening’s big winner The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, he told Whatsonstage.com: “I’ll be back on stage by the end of the year, though I can’t reveal anything more at the moment. But I’m very excited to come back.”

Hiddleston, who won Best Newcomer at the Oliviers in 2008, added: “British theatre is one of our greatest exports, and it’s the lifeblood of central London. It was really interesting in the economic downturn that theatre attendance went up by an incredible percentage. People love going to the theatre, they love sitting together and watching something together and being moved at the same time.”

The 32-year-old star recently finished filming Thor: The Dark World, which is due out late October. “It’s such an honour to go round the track again with Thor knowing that the crowd loved it the first time,” he said.
