Three time Olivier Award-winner Alex Jennings will join the cast of The Light in the Piazza musical at Southbank Centre this summer.

Jennings, who recently appeared in The Crown and Unforgotten, will play the role of Signor Naccarelli in the musical. He joins a previously announced cast led by Renée Fleming, Dove Cameron, Rob Houchen, Celinde Schoenmaker, Liam Tamne, Marie McLaughlin and Malcolm Sinclair.

The Tony Award-winning musical is running at the Royal Festival Hall for 20 performances only and will be directed by Daniel Evans, designed by Robert Jones with costumes from Brigitte Reiffenstuel. Lighting will be by Mark Henderson and sound by Mick Potter, with Opera North playing the score, conducted by Kimberley Grigsby.

The Light in the Piazza has a book by Craig Lucas, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel and is based on the novel by Elizabeth Spencer. It is a love story set in Florence in the summer of 1953 where Clara and Fabrizio Naccarelli experience love at first sight but a secret gets in the way of their happiness.

The piece originally opened in Seattle in 2003 and ran on Broadway in 2005. It won the Tony Award for Best Original Score.
