The ill-fated ship never made it across the Atlantic in 1912, but an acclaimed revival of a musical based on its story is about to do just that.

After receiving rave reviews and two WhatsOnStage Award nominations, the Southwark Playhouse's 2013 revival of Titanic is reportedly transferring to Broadway later this year, following a six-week run in Toronto.

Thom Southerland's production will run at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre 22 July to 31 August 2014, with full casting and creative team to be announced at a later date.

Based on real people aboard the doomed liner in 1912, Maury Yeston and Peter Stone's musical was first staged on Broadway in 1997, shortly before the release of James Cameron's blockbuster film. It ran for two years and picked up five Tonys, including Best Musical.

The lead producers on the transfer are Barry and Fran Weissler, who've previously produced The Scottsboro Boys and Chicago, and David Mirvish.
