Iconic pop group the Pet Shop Boys are to premiere a new musical at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year.

Jonathan Harvey has written the book for Musik, which features six songs – four entirely new – by the Pet Shop Boys. The piece will be a 50-minute, one-woman show starring Francis Barber.

Barber will be reprising her role as Billie Trix from the 2001 musical, Closer to Heaven, also by Harvey and the Pet Shop Boys. Musik follows her as a drug-addled icon and rock star, as she looks back over her career and life.

Musik will run from 5 to 24 August at Assembly Rooms (Bijou venue).

The Pet Shop Boys said that they had loved the character of Billie Trix and had discussed the idea of a one-woman show. They added: "[It] gives us the chance to write more songs for her as she looks back on her incredible career. We're thrilled that this show is finally happening."

Harvey said: "It has been such a treat reconnecting and working with Chris and Neil on this, 20 years after our first foray into musical theatre writing. I can't wait to see Frances Barber inhabit her again as she did so hilariously and so touchingly all those years ago."
