10. Evita

Phoenix Theatre

Emma Hatton tackles the titular role in this revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, about the controversial and turbulent life of Argentine icon Eva Peron. As Eva's popularity explodes, so too do the political consequences of her actions. Sarah Crompton gave the show a glowing review when the run started, and it has proven a hit with audiences as it now makes number 10 on our list of top sellers.

9. Glengarry Glen Ross

Playhouse Theatre

David Mamet's edgy comedy makes its return to the West End in a new star-studded production starring Christian Slater, Kris Marshall and Robert Glenister. Set in a Chicago real-estate office, the play follows the masculine burliness of salesmen forced to compete for their jobs. The show is directed by Sam Yates, who most recently directed Desire under the Elms at Sheffield Crucible.

8. Wicked

Apollo Victoria Theatre

A regular on our monthly roundups, Wicked continues to excite audiences in the West End (with a new national tour also beginning in Bristol early next year). We caught up with the cast a few week ago to hear some of their Wicked-est secrets – you can see the video here.

The magical revised story of the trip to Oz is booking through to early 2019.

7. Cabaret

UK Tour

Will Young and Louise Redknapp star in this touring production of Cabaret, originally directed by National Theatre artistic director Rufus Norris. The musical first debuted on Broadway in 1966, and along with the film adaptation has since gone on to win 8 Oscars, 7 BAFTAs and 13 Tonys. Young received a WhatsOnStage award for his Emcee when the show first debuted.

6. The Ferryman

Gielgud Theatre

Jez Butterworth's play The Ferryman became the toast of London theatre when it sold out at the Royal Court earlier this year, and its momentum has carried through to its West End run at the Gielgud Theatre. The show, set in rural Ireland, sees a family beset with internal and external anxieties as the harvest comes in.

With a cast change due next week, fresh faces will join the production to see it through until the end of the year.

5. Lady Windermere's Fan

Vaudeville Theatre

Jennifer Saunders announced her return to the West End earlier this month when she was cast as the scene-stealer Duchess of Berwick in Oscar Wilde's classic play Lady Windermere's Fan. The show marks the second in the year-long Wilde season at the Vaudeville Theatre, which kicks off with A Woman of No Importance this month.

4. The Band

UK Tour

Manchester was starstruck last week when Take That appeared at the Opera House to officially open new musical The Band, featuring their classic discography. The show tells the story of five girls, friends for 25 years, united by their love of the music of the titular Band. The young band are played by newly formed pop group Five To Five, who won on BBC's Let It Shine earlier this year. See our video from the opening night here.

3. Cilla

UK Tour

Cilla Black's seminal career is the subject of this new musical, with Kara Lily Hayworth tackling the leading role following a nationwide search. Starting with her early years on the Merseybeat scene, the piece contains all the Cilla classics as well as cameos from the likes of Brian Epstein and The Beatles. You can see a sneak preview of Hayworth in action here, before catching the star as she continues on a UK tour.

2. Le Grand Mort

Trafalgar Studios

Before he passed away, playwright Stephen Clark wrote the main part of Michael in Le Grand Mort for BBC entertainer Julian Clary, who is joined by James Nelson-Joyce in the two-hander production. The play ruminates on issues of love, sex and death, as well as dabbling with serial killers, all within the cosy atmosphere of Trafalgar Studios' subterranean space.

1. The Birthday Party

Harold Pinter Theatre

A birthday party for The Birthday Party – on its 60th anniversary, Harold Pinter's classic play returns to the West End. An all-star cast will include Toby Jones, Stephen Mangan, Zoe Wannamaker and Doctor Who companion Pearl Mackie. Often referred to as 'a comedy of menace' the show sees a seaside hostel disturbed by an unexpected visitor. Ian Rickson will direct in what is sure to be a landmark production.
