Ashley Day's West End theatre credits include The Book of Mormon, The Wizard of Oz, Evita (Adelphi), Mary Poppins and Oliver!
He is currently starring in An American in Paris and has just taken over in the lead role as Jerry Mulligan.
We caught up with Ashley and asked him: "If you were stranded on a desert island which five showtunes could you not live without?"
I have always been a Gershwin fan, from the classics to the covers. But never have they resonated more, or felt more intimate and special to me, than when performing this song in Act II of this "‘S Wonderful" musical.
I just love the simplicity and optimism of this song and the character’s outlook on life.
I performed this song in the West End over 250 times and the reaction from audiences each and every time was wild and brilliant!
This is a really personal choice as the lyrics have huge significance to the relationship I had with my now late father. It’s a beautiful song.
West Side Story was the first CD my parents bought for me. I later saw the movie and the thrilling mix of Jerome Robbins’ choreography and Leonard Bernstein’s music remain exciting and fresh to this day.
