An American in Paris had its West End opening at the Dominion Theatre last night, followed by a glitzy after party at the Waldorf Hilton with guests including Leslie Caron who played the lead role in the 1951 film.
Other guests in attendance included Elizabeth Hurley, Salma Hayek, Danny Mac, Carley Stenson and Samantha Barks. A host of Strictly stars and theatre choreographers including Drew McOnie and Stephen Mear were also in attendance.
In her five star review for WhatsOnStage, Sarah Crompton described the show as 'sumptuously beautiful and heartfelt', heralding Robert Fairchild as 'ballet royalty' and praising Leanne Cope for giving 'a glorious show its gentle heart'.
With direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, An American in Paris has music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, and a new book by Craig Lucas.
Based on the Academy Award-winning film starring Gene Kelly, the musical includes the hit songs "I Got Rhythm", "'S Wonderful" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me".
The musical is set in Paris and tells the story of Jerry Mulligan, an American GI trying to make it as a painter in post-war Paris.
